If you’re trying to get into running or need to stop that boredom strike after a certain distance, I have a trick for you. Now I got into running while at Army BCT. I NEVER thought I would be able to run those kind of distances in one session, but I did. After leaving basic training, you always tend to keep a habit or two when you return to civilian life. My habit for sure was running. Running allows me to release all stress and worries. Running is just one of my favorite hobbies to relieve myself of everything going on and just meditate. Now when it comes to running, those long distances can cause a little boredom. I mean imagine running 6 miles (about an hour for me) with no form of entertainment. Now a lot of people may say, “Just listen to music.” Have you ever played one FULL playlist without skipping a song? Listening to music is okay but just not ideal for me all the time. If I don’t like a song, I will want to change it. Me wanting to change that song can throw me off pace. What if the next song is not what I want to listen to? So now I’m so focused on finding the right song and not aware of my pace or even the route I’m supposed to take. I personally no longer play music during running sessions. I strictly listen to podcasts. A lot of people wonder what I do to cover such long milage without stopping from boredom so here I go. Before I get into what podcasts I listen to, let’s get into why I listen to podcasts and prefer them over music.
Why do I listen to podcasts?
I listen to podcasts simply because they are engaging and better time management. The MAIN podcast I listen to is about 60 minutes or longer. As I said before, running is a form of meditation for me so I listen to a self development podcast. I like to think about what can I improve in myself, what can I change, what to do to get to the next level, etc. While covering these thoughts, time slips my mind. By the time I complete an episode, I’ve ran about 5+ miles. Choosing a self development podcast also lowers my chances of wanting to skip an episode because there is a 99% chance there is something in that podcast that will better me. I know in that episode there is something I can take out of it and better myself. Podcasts are also engaging (depending on what category you choose). Lets say you want to listen to a crime series via podcast. You will definitely lose track of time and forget you’re running because you are really into those. The mystery of context given will put you in a more focused state. Podcasts, in my opinion, are the best tools for long distance runs and lowering your chances of becoming bored. Now on to which podcasts I listen to.
